The kidneys which are located at the bottom of our rib cage, on both sides of the spine has a bean -like shape.


In the body, the two kidneys perform a variety of functions such as filtering waste products, excess water, and other impurities from the blood. The waste products filtered are always stored in the bladder and later expelled through urine.


Furthermore, our kidneys regulate pH, salt, and potassium levels in our body. They also produce hormones that help to regulate blood pressure and control the production of red blood cells.


These kidneys are also in charge of activating a form of vitamin D that helps our body absorb calcium for building bones and regulating muscle function.


With the diverse functions performed by our kidneys, it is of utmost importance that we maintain and take proper care of them.


Let’s discuss some important tips to help keep our kidneys healthy and safe.


1. Drink lots of clean water. At least 8 glasses of water have been recommended per day. This will help the kidneys flush wastes out of the body through urine, sweats etc.


2. As much as possible avoid smoking either directly or indirectly (by inhaling smokes from a smoker). Smokes have been found to cause damage to the kidneys.


3. Maintain a healthy weight and diet. This is important to protect the kidneys. Healthy diet low in sodium, processed meats, and other kidney-damaging foods may help reduce the risk of kidney damage. Consume more of fruits, vegetables and healthy foods. As much as possible, avoid processed drinks and foods.


4. Maintain a healthy blood pressure. High blood pressure is detrimental to the kidneys and therefore constant monitoring of the blood pressure is good for the kidneys.


5. Always remember to stay fit and active. Constant exercise may help lower the risk of kidney damage.


And lastly try to control your blood sugar. Controlling your blood sugar will help lower the risk of damage to the kidneys.
