STEM School Project For Makoko Slum
The waterways were grey-black and dirty, children who were expected to be in school at the time of the visit were paddling canoes and running errands for their parents.
This was a sad realization for us. A need assessment conducted gave us insight into why many of these kids are out of school, from parental financial constraints, lack of knowledge of the importance of education, lack of conducive environment for schooling, lack of standard school in the community.
The outcome of the assessment was a Makoko Vacation School organized in August 2020 through which school bags, books, nutritious foods, and scholarships were awarded to children.
A further meeting with the stakeholders and parents of the community gave us more insight into the basic need of the community; a standard STEM world-class school to build the future of these children through technology and science; a vision to raise 5, 000 tech-savvy Makoko children in the next 5 years. Dr.Chinwe Nnagbo, a Nigerian dentist based in North America and Founder of Chinwe Nnagbo Foundation, and Dr. Ashley McMillan, an American educator said “Education is free for kids in Canada, we can make it happen for the children in this slum”
- Six blocks of classes for Nursery 1 – Primary 6
- A mobile toilet for teachers and pupils.
- Fully equipped and functional ICT classroom
- Fully functional sport center
- Teachers general room
- Library room
We cannot do this alone; we need your support to build this world-class standard STEM school for the children of Makoko Slum to be ready for the August 2022/2023 academic session.
