The teeth is an important part of our body which require extensive care and protection against decay and plaque.

Because our teeth play an important role in our daily eating life, we must ensure they are properly cared for.

Tooth decay and gum disease are usually caused by plaque which is a sticky combination of bacteria and food which begins to build up on teeth within minutes after eating.

If we refuse to clean our teeth daily, plaque will develop and lead to decay or gum disease and if these are not removed, they turn into a hard deposit called tartar that becomes trapped at the base of the tooth.

Plaque and tartar irritate and inflame the gums. Bacteria and the toxins they produce cause the gums to become infected, swollen and tender.

How should we care for our teeth?

1. Flossing at least once per day will help our teeth and It’s best done after brushing.

Flossing helps to remove plaque that is left behind after brushing from between the teeth and on the gums.

2. Our teeth should be brushed twice a day for at least 2 minutes each time with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

3. Always use fluoride toothpaste. The fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and helps prevent tooth decay.

4. It’s healthy to always replace toothbrush every 3 to 4 months or even sooner. A worn-out toothbrush will not properly clean your teeth. If it’s an electric toothbrush, change heads every 3 to 4 months as well.

5. It’s very important to eat a healthy diet. You are less likely to get gum disease if you eat healthy foods instead of processed, chemical-filled foods.

6. As much as possible avoid sweets and sweetened drinks. Consuming these processed drinks and sweets increase the risk of cavities. If you do eat or drink sweets, then make sure to brush your teeth soon after.

7. Avoid smoking. It’s been shown that smokers have more teeth and gum problems than non-smokers.

8. Keep dentures, retainers, and other appliances clean. This includes brushing them regularly. You may also need to soak them in a cleansing solution.

9. As much as possible, routine check up with your dentist will help you detect any issue quickly. Many dentists recommend having the teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months for optimal oral health.
